Back from the dead

Hello everybody

This is my 1st attempt at my blog. Yesterday I gave a formal lecture in one of our big lecture halls to 2nd yr medical students. I suddenly had the desire to change the lecture to e-learning. These formal lectures are not very interactive and I think that e-learning can be more interactive, even if you do not see the students.

I have got some idea of my project, maybe something to teach microbiology registrars about parasitology. Parasitology is a very visual field, you can just image all the pictures of parasite eggs!

Since I fell so behind with by blogging I started to read one of our prescribed articles, entitled "Good teaching is good teaching: An emerging set of guiding principles and practices for design and development of distance education." One controversial line in the conclusion was that "time, location, and pace of study are becoming less important as indicators of quality instruction" and gave me something to think about.

  1. Welcome online Bugsy! Glad to see you are engaging in the material and reading it critically.

If the module can open up more possibilities for creating good (or shall we be brave and go for "better") teaching (and learning) then we will be very happy. It is one thing to say and read and think that e-learning is the future of education (or at least an important part), but one has to experience and test it out oneself.

One of last year's students, Wilhelm Steyn, also thought about creating a learning programm e for registrars in obestetrics. You might want to go and read what he had in mind and how he thought through his project.

Wilhelm's blog can be seen at webaddress: http://ugobstb.blogspot.com/

I must say, even though the idea of seeing parasites live makes me a bit weak in the knees, I will be (I know) fascinated by that microworld you are inhabiting.

Good luck with your reading, blogging and ADDIE process of design.

  2. Hey there!
I can totally see the parasites thing working! If you are able to, check out the presentation that won the first prize at the SOTL conference this year....they used videos of autopsy procedures of the pituitary and it was brilliantly graphic :) Maybe contact Juanita Bezhuidenout, I'm sure she'll be quite excited about your idea.
